Read Below for some tips & tricks to helping your Kindergartener with high-frequency word recognition.

  1. First, print out your Kindergarten-ready High-Frequency Word Flashcards. Print on a heavy-duty cardstock in full color. Use the Default or the Fit to Page Setting. Print cards front and back.
  2. Cut your cards accordingly.
  3. Start with just 5 words at a time, and take your time learning them. These are high-frequency words and not necessarily CVC words. So, the key is memory and recognition and NOT sounding out these particular words.
  4. Practice for a short time in the morning, or at night (no longer than 5-6 minutes per session).
  5. Practice at least four times a week (they will appreciate a few breaks).
  6. If your child struggles with any words, in particular, use the back to write any helpful mnemonics or other keys that can trigger her memory. Allow her to look at the back for help if she struggles.
  7. Practice using the words in sentences.
  8. Give your child a book and ask her to search through a few pages. Circle or highlight any high-frequency words she finds.
  9. Use these words to practice writing as well. Kindergarteners should be able to read and write these words independently and in simple sentences before first grade.
