Engage — Play — Teach — All Things Preschool @ Home

Hi! I’m Sarah, author, and creator of the curriculum you will find here at the Preschool Homeroom.

Preschool Homeroom was born out of a passion for spending the first five years at home with my son, engaging with him in activities, and the desire to get him Kindergarten-ready.

Born of a Desire to Savor the Moments

Many mothers asked me in those early years if I was planning to send my son to preschool. I just wasn’t excited about doing that though. As an older mother, I am very aware of just how fast the years would go, and I wanted to keep my son home with me. I am all about savoring those precious moments, knowing that one day he will be packing his bags and heading out into this great big world.

Home We Stayed and Home We Learned

I determined to keep him home with me and teach him myself during those preschool years. Since I had been a credentialed teacher in previous years, I already had an idea of what he needed to be learning, and how to go about teaching those things. Things like:

  • Number and letter recognition
  • Numerical and Written Number Matching
  • Letter sounds and phonetics
  • Site words
  • Fine motor skills necessary to write letters, numbers, names
  • Pattern Recognition
  • Pattern Matching
  • Foundations of Mathematics
  • Counting Up, Counting Down
  • Less Than and Greater Than
  • Cutting and basic scissor safety
  • Stapling  and basic stapler safety

However, I didn’t want to just stop there. In teaching him, I incorporated some of his own ideas and developing interests into what we were doing and in doing so, I was able to make the learning process fun and engaging.

We eventually started doing: science and discovery activities, sensory activities that allowed me to also teach him letters, numbers, and phonics. Additionally, we explored our community and much of the nature that exists around our city. I took my son out to see farms, animals, lakes, rivers, creeks, grasslands, wetlands, museums, observed ponds, and trees, studied the seasons and weather patterns, caught tadpoles, farmed caterpillars, and learned about lifecycles and more.

Eventually, I realized it was time to start putting all the learning activities we were doing on paper. That is when Preschool Homeroom was born!
