Who Needs 10 More Simple Sensory Activities for Preschoolers?

10 sensory play activities – toddlers, preschoolers

As I write this, we are in the middle of a global pandemic! That may not be the case anymore as this blog finds it’s way to your desktop or mobile device, but regardless, what mom doesn’t need a few more fun and simple sensory play activities for your preschoolers to add to your afternoon play fun? And so I have taken some time to share below some of the fun we have been having in these last few weeks. Additionally, I also have a number of other blogs I have written with activities for toddlers and preschoolers:

I share below ten very simple and engaging activities to do with your toddler or preschooler. But first, let’s talk about sensory play.

Why is Sensory Play so Important?

Why is sensory play is such a crucial part of every child five and under development? Children learn through play, an idea I think most parents already know. More specifically, It is through sensory play that a child begins to understand his environment through observation and experimentation. The child gains the ability to draw his own conclusions about the world. Sensory activities provide the foundation for all the cognitive skills necessary for children to succeed in school, starting as early as preschool:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Solving problems
  • Understanding science
  • Spatial awareness
  • Pattern recognition.

So take a look below at these super simple sensory play activities that you can facilitate for your child.

A spin off one of our favorite books, because we happen to have more ducks around than bears. Keep the kids entertained for hours with a fun hide and seek game using toys you already have at home, such as rubber duck bath toys! Nothing beats a rainy day like hide and seek. Hide a bunch of them. Give the kids a bucket to collect their loot, and a single word for each duck that will clue them into where they are. Who knows, perhaps you will want to play too.

A sensory play activity that includes a little STEM too! It's all about the three forms of water, and equal portions.

An exciting, multi-day activity using water…

1) Let the little ones pour water into clear jars and move the water from jar to jar until there is an equal portion of water in each jar.

2) H20 comes in three forms (solid, liquid, gas). First, play around with the water a bit by completing the above activity. Second, let them pour the water into the ice tray, again working with equal portions. Observe over several hours as it freezes. Another day, heat ice and and observe H2O as a gas.

3) You can also provide a brief explanation of evaporation when observing H20 as a gas.

4) Have fun!
