Three ways to start enjoying the little things in life.
At work one morning in the early spring, the young lady whose desk was adjacent to mine shared with me how much she loved her front porch. At the time she was living in a little bungalow in an older, tree lined neighborhood. She new how to enjoy the little things in life. She would get herself up in the morning, make coffee, and sit on her porch. My co-worker enjoyed the crisp cool air. She loved watching cars drive away to work and watching people walk their dogs. I remember envying her because she had the time, or rather, made the time, to enjoy her mornings. And she did all this despite having to be at work at 8 am, the same time as me. So what’s my point in sharing this lovely story with you?
A Laugh, A Cry, and not a Clock in Sight!
When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried? When was the last time you truly lost track of time? So often we forget how amazing life truly is. We forget because we are rushed into the day at the sound of an alarm, and we don’t give ourselves ten extra minutes to step outside and breathe the cool, crisp morning air. We watch the clock, race to get in the car before the traffic gets bad, and we gulp down our coffee with no moment to savor it. In a hurry, we often forget to eat, and we forget to say hello to those familiar faces we pass by every day. Then, our evenings are spent on a couch watching a show which takes us away from our realities. Why? To what end?

Why don’t we Enjoy Life More?
Perhaps all of this is just a natural consequence of growing older, becoming an adult, having to be responsible? Perhaps laughter and losing track of time are expressions of youthfulness, or of a carefree life? Or perhaps we simply need to evaluate what matters most and start making those things a priority so we can find meaning throughout our days.
Let’s Create New Habits!
Let’s challenge ourselves this week to laugh more than we frown. Let’s start finding the silly and the simple in our days.
Let’s begin pursuing the things we love so much so, that we are not watching the clock. Allow yourself to lose track of time.
Don’t forget to cry! I know it seems counter-intuitive to enjoying life. However, with every cry comes a deeper understanding of the world and the people around us. Crying heals the heart. It makes us vulnerable. Finally, it allows us to appreciate and enjoy the little things in life.
