A homemade playdough recipe – Best playdough ever!
I discovered the best homemade playdough recipe during a play date I had with a friend several years ago. We were at The Art Box (a really cool kids-make-art place near our home). They had a playdough table and it was the best, most elastic, and soft playdough ever! And it didn’t have the traditional not-so-desired playdough smell either, which is always a bonus in my opinion. I begged the owners for the recipe and the very next day I was making playdough with my son. Find out why it is the best below.
Since then, I have made several batches and given them out to friends as favors at parties. I have tweaked a few of the steps just a bit. Ultimately, this is the best homemade playdough recipe, and it is quick and easy to make. Store it in a plastic Ziploc bag for weeks or even months. Remember, it doesn’t smell which makes me more likely to enjoy getting my hands in it with my toddler! Are you ready for the recipe yet?
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp cream of tartar (not a traditional ingredient but really helps play dough be softer/fluffier. It also makes the play dough much more elastic. This is the ingredient that makes this play dough so amazing)!
- 1/3 cup salt. I know it seems like a lot. However, if you don’t use this much salt, you run the risk of your play dough being too sticky.
- 1 cup water
- Desired food coloring drops
- 1 Tbl Vegetable Oil
Note: This recipe can easily be made in a 4-quart saucepan. I double or triple the recipe because I love sharing the play dough with friends. Also, making more is great because, well, it is the best homemade playdough ever! If you are doubling or tripling the recipe, use a larger stockpot.
Directions
- In a large saucepan, mix flour, tartar and salt.
- In a separate bowl, combine water, food coloring and vegetable oil. Mix well. Note that adding the food coloring during this step will ensure more even distribution of color. You can also continue adding more during the cooking and cooling/kneading steps.
- Combine water mixture with flour mixture in saucepan and cook over med-low heat, stirring constantly. Mixture will be initially lumpy but will begin to thicken. After several minutes, it will begin to resemble play dough. As it cooks and as you stir you can add more food coloring if you wish.
- Once it reaches a consistency where it is no longer sticking to the sides of the pan, AND you can spoon it into little balls without it sticking to the spoon, it is time to remove it. I typically use parchment paper. However, there have been times where I just remove onto a cutting board and it is fine.
- Let it cool a few minutes.
- Using your hands, knead the play dough to get out any air pockets and to achieve the consistency you want. You can also add more food coloring as you knead, (pun intended).
- Seal in a quart size Ziploc bag and keep at room temperature.
